THE UNION DRESS

Collar, placket and pockets

Preparation: 29th Sept. 10am - 5pm

Sewing weekend: 5th - 6th Oct 2019 10-5pm

Location: The barn, SA44 5HE

I have safeguarded the last 6 copies of this timeless (but discontinued) pattern from Merchant and Mills. Join me for the last sewing weekend of its kind to make this remarkable design that features some of my favourite sewing techniques.

What you will make:

The Union dress from Merchant & Mills. This dress features both side pockets and in-seam front pockets and is finished with small side splits.

With a nod to traditional workwear the Union Dress is a versatile pattern that works with many fabrics. Showcase your top stitching in utilitarian denim, make it more relaxed in laundered linen or go smarter with a seasonal wool flannel. The waist seam allows you to pick contrasting fabrics or different colours of the same fabric. The sleeves can be rolled ready for work!

What you will learn:

  • how to choose your pattern size.

  • how to trace and make simple fit adjustments.

  • tips for neat cutting and interfacing.

  • how to sew perfect darts.

  • how to construct both side seam pockets and front pockets.

  • topstitching techniques for a professional look.

  • setting sleeves in.

  • construct a button band.

  • sewing buttonholes.

  • constructing a collar.

  • quality finishing options from french seams to bias binding

On the preparation day you will be able to trace your pattern, address fitting adjustments if necesary and cut your fabric.

If you can't attend the preparation day, I will send you the course pattern by mail and  book you for a video call to ensure you are fully prepared for the sewing weekend ahead.

The sewing weekend

On the first day will be all about sewing beautiful darts, constructing pockets and learning to set sleeves in. We will pay close attention to the finishes on both the inside and the outside throughout the garment construction.

On the second day you will construct a button band with perfectly spaced buttonholes, securely sew buttons by hand and acquire the necessary techniques to  achieve a neat collar.

All the while there is tea flowing and we take the time to share a delicious lunch.

Each class is held in a small group of 6 (max) so there is plenty of time for personal fitting and support.
